Lucile Boulanger
Masterclass: Gamba master course
Lucile Boulanger

Lucile began her viola da gamba studies at the age of five with Christine Plubeau, then continued her studies with Aiane Maurette, Jérôme Hantaï and finally Christophe-Coinn at the Conservatoire Nationale Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris. He has won prizes in several international competitions, such as the Bach-Abel-Wettbewerb in Cologne, the Società Umanitaria Musical Competition in Milan and the Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges.

As a sought-after chamber musician, she has played and recorded with musicians such as Philippe Pierlot, François Lazarevitch, Justin Taylor and Alice Piérot, and regularly performs with major ensembles such as L'Achéron (François Joubert-Caillet), Pygmalion (Raphaël Pichon), Correspondances (Sébastien Daucé), Vox Luminis (Lionel Meunier) and Les Epopées (Stéphane Fuget). She also performs regularly in France and abroad.

With harpsichordist Arnaud De Pasquale, she has recorded two duo albums with Alpha (Bach sonatas in 2012 and works by C.P.E. Bach and Graun in 2015), both of which have received several awards.

In 2018, dedicated to Forqueray and her love for the Italian violin sonata, she released a solo opus on Harmoni Mundi, which was described by critics as "At times the energy jolts the listener, at times the caressing sound shivers, at times the sheer emotion unsettles, and yet everywhere the same precision and density characterize her." BBC Music Magazine describes the latter disc as "irresistible" and compares her playing freedom to that of Jacqueline de Pré. A new album of Bach and Abel will be released on Alpha in 2022.

Lucile Boulanger refuses to see the viola da gamba as the bearer of a bygone aesthetic tradition, but is working through her programmes to expand and emancipate her instrument's repertoire, not only by practising transcriptions but also by commissioning contemporary works. Several compositions have been written for her.
