A full evening of Purcell opera? Yes, indeed! The Purcell Choir and Capella Savaria invite you on a journey filled with familiar rarities. Many people recognize excerpts from Dido and Aeneas or The Fairy Queen by Henry Purcell – whether from films, background scores, signature tunes, or quoted in works by later composers. But what do these pieces sound like in their original form? This concert offers a chance to hear them as they were meant to be heard. Both operas revolve around love stories. The tale of Dido and Aeneas first appeared in Virgil’s Aeneid. While it features gods and witches alongside mortals, its message – about heartbreak and lost love – resonated deeply in Purcell’s time and still does today. The Fairy Queen is essentially a musical reimagining of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, though Purcell approached the story in his own unique way, reshaping aspects of the original play to suit the stage and his musical vision. This concert is for anyone curious to explore works that may be floating in our collective musical memory, yet somehow remain unknown in their full beauty. Under the direction of György Vashegyi, the Purcell Choir and Capella Savaria promise an interpretation that is not only authentic and period-appropriate, but also deeply thoughtful and insightful.
All the ingredients for a magical evening are in place – we look forward to welcoming you!
