Michael Wehrmeyer

Born in Berlin in 2002, Michael Wehrmeyer discovered his passion for the cello at the age of five, inspired by his older sister’s violin playing. Listening to her often, his interest in music developed quite naturally. He pursued his pre-college studies with Prof. Hyun-Jung Berger in Augsburg and is currently continuing his education under Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar. In parallel, he is a member of the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic.
Michael has received important artistic inspiration from renowned musicians such as Julius Berger, David Geringas, Frans Helmerson, Jens Peter Maintz, Ivan Monighetti, and Valentin Erben. His participation in masterclasses has taken him to festivals in Rutesheim and Kronberg.
In addition, he is a scholarship recipient of the International Music Academy in Liechtenstein. He has earned numerous accolades in competitions, including multiple first prizes at the national Jugend musiziert competition, the Music Prize of the City of Regensburg, and a scholarship from the German Music Competition. The 2024/25 season marks his inclusion in the national “Concerts of Young Artists” program (Bundesauswahl Konzerte Junger Künstler).
As a soloist, he has performed with renowned orchestras such as the Kiel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Thuringian Philharmonic Gotha-Eisenach, and the Dresden University Symphony Orchestra. He is also active in chamber music as a founding member of the 2Cities Cello Quartet, with which he recently performed at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and the Berlin Philharmonie. He gained early orchestral experience with the National Youth Orchestra of Germany and the European Union Youth Orchestra. As a member of the Karajan Academy, he regularly performs with the Berlin Philharmonic. Michael Wehrmeyer plays a Giovanni & Francesco Grancino Cello, Milan, 1660-1670 – a generous loan from the SINFONIMA Foundation Mannheim.
