In the time of the Sun King, the court at Versailles was renowned for its splendour and musical life, which served as a model for all of Europe. Michel-Richard de Lalande was one of four composers commissioned by Louis XIV to set the exact text to music, chosen to compose the major sacred works of the liturgical year. The genre of the grand motet (grand motet) truly flourished at the court of the Sun King, and Lalande was one of its greatest masters. These were essentially multi-movement cantatas that involved at least two choirs and four soloists, with texts usually drawn from psalms and other Latin hymns. Due to their large scale and technical challenges, they had almost completely fallen into oblivion—yet now, the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra are taking on the task of devoting an entire evening to these extraordinary works. What’s more, some of the most highly acclaimed singers of the French Baroque scene will join them as soloists.
